Spark Ads vs GMV Max: How They Differ and How to Use Both on TikTok Shop

Spark Ads vs GMV Max compared: control, creative, targeting, reporting and a stage-by-stage framework for TikTok Shop brands. See how to run both together.

Spark Ads is an ad format that boosts real TikTok posts, from your own account or a creator who authorizes you, so all engagement stays on the original video. GMV Max is TikTok Shop's automated campaign type that picks creative, audiences and placements on its own to grow shop sales at your ROI target. For Shop-destination sales campaigns, GMV Max is the required engine at the time of writing (October 2026), while Spark Ads posts serve as creative fuel and as a manual tool for launches, awareness and testing.

Key takeaways

  • Spark Ads is a creative format. GMV Max is a campaign type. They are not direct substitutes.
  • Since July 2025, Sales campaigns sending traffic to TikTok Shop must use GMV Max, according to TikTok's help center.
  • Spark Ads give you manual control over targeting and objectives. GMV Max trades control for automation.
  • Authorized creator posts power both: GMV Max can pull in Spark Ads posts and affiliate videos as creative.
  • The best setup for most growing shops is GMV Max for sales, Spark Ads for launches and testing, and a creator program feeding both.

What are Spark Ads?

Spark Ads is TikTok's native ad format for promoting organic posts. TikTok's help center explains that Spark Ads use posts from real accounts so that views, comments, shares, likes and follows gained from boosting are attributed to the organic post.

You can promote posts from your own brand account or from a creator who authorizes you. Creators generate an authorization code inside the TikTok app and choose how long the authorization lasts. The ad keeps the creator's handle and caption, so it looks and feels like a normal video in the feed.

Spark Ads are not tied to a single objective. They can run in standard Ads Manager campaigns with your own targeting, bidding and objective choices, such as reach, traffic or video views.

How does Spark Ads authorization work?

When the post belongs to a creator, you need their permission. The usual route is a post code:

  1. The creator opens the video in the TikTok app, taps the three dots and opens ad settings.
  2. They generate an authorization code and set how long the authorization should last.
  3. They send you the code, and you apply it in TikTok Ads Manager to add the post to your creative library.
  4. You build the ad using that post. The display name and caption come from the original post and cannot be edited during ad creation.

A few rules from TikTok's Spark Ads FAQ are worth knowing at the time of writing. Videos up to 10 minutes long can be sparked. The same organic post can be reused across many ads. And a creator cannot simply delete a post that is running as a Spark Ad; it has to be un-authorized first. Because each video needs its own code, brands working with many creators should keep a simple tracker of codes, posts and expiry dates.

What does Spark Ads control look like in practice?

Say you are launching a new serum and have three creator videos with very different hooks. With Spark Ads in a standard campaign, you can put each video in front of the audience you choose, under the objective you choose, with a budget you set per test. You see clearly which hook earns attention.

That level of control is the main reason Spark Ads still earn a place in the plan, even when GMV Max handles shop sales. It answers "which message works?" before you hand creative to an automated system that answers "how many orders can we get at this ROI?"

What is GMV Max?

GMV Max is an automated campaign type for TikTok Shop Ads. TikTok describes Product GMV Max as optimizing for your TikTok Shop's total channel ROI, combining paid and organic promotion. You choose products, an ROI target and a daily budget. The system creates and pauses ads, optimizes audiences and chooses from your available videos.

It comes in two forms: Product GMV Max for catalog sales and LIVE GMV Max for livestreams. For a deeper walkthrough, read our guide: What is GMV Max on TikTok Shop?

Why is "Spark Ads vs GMV Max" a slightly misleading question?

Because one is a format and the other is a campaign. The real question for TikTok Shop brands is where each fits.

TikTok's help center states that starting July 2025, GMV Max is the default and only supported campaign type for TikTok Shop Ads using the Sales objective with a TikTok Shop destination. New Video, Product and LIVE Shopping Ads with a Shop destination can no longer be created.

So if your goal is shop sales through paid ads, GMV Max is the route. Spark Ads still matter in two ways. First, TikTok's GMV Max overview notes it can pull videos with product links from linked accounts and Spark Ads posts, so authorized creator content becomes GMV Max creative. Second, Spark Ads remain a hands-on tool for non-Shop objectives like awareness and engagement.

How does each one handle reporting?

This is where teams get tripped up. Spark Ads report like any Ads Manager campaign: spend, impressions, clicks and the results tied to your chosen objective.

GMV Max reports differently. TikTok says all orders from products you advertise are attributed to Product GMV Max, including organic and affiliate orders. That makes its ROI a whole-shop view for promoted products, not an ad-only ROAS.

Never compare Spark Ads ROAS and GMV Max ROI side by side as if they measure the same thing. Benchmark GMV Max against your pre-launch baseline sales instead.

Which should you prioritize at each shop stage?

Use this framework as a starting point. Every shop is different, but the order of operations rarely changes.

Stage 1: New shop (little content, little sales history)

  • Priority: build content, not ad spend. Seed product to creators and get your affiliate program moving.
  • Spark Ads: optional, small tests on your strongest early creator videos to learn which hooks land.
  • GMV Max: launch only once you have a reasonable pool of videos, with a conservative budget and an ROI target grounded in margin.

Our guides on a free samples strategy and affiliate commission rates cover this stage in detail.

Stage 2: Traction (consistent daily orders, growing creator base)

  • Priority: make GMV Max the main sales engine.
  • Spark Ads: use for product launches, seasonal pushes and testing new angles before they flow into GMV Max.
  • GMV Max: focus on your proven products, add authorized creator posts where coverage is thin, and scale budget as creative volume grows.

Stage 3: Scale (multiple hero products, steady content pipeline)

  • Priority: protect margin and keep creative fresh.
  • Spark Ads: awareness and community campaigns that build demand GMV Max can later convert.
  • GMV Max: segment products by margin and role, consider LIVE GMV Max if you already sell on LIVE, and judge results on contribution profit.

How do you run Spark Ads and GMV Max together?

The two work best as parts of one system. Here is the workflow we use when managing Spark Ads and GMV Max campaigns for brands.

  1. Source creator content continuously. A steady flow of new videos is the input for everything else. This is the job of TikTok Shop affiliate marketing and, over time, a network of repeat creators.
  2. Collect authorization on promising posts. Ask creators for Spark Ads codes on videos with strong early signals, and choose authorization windows that cover your plans.
  3. Give each tool a distinct job. Keep Shop-destination sales in GMV Max. Use Spark Ads for non-sales objectives like reach, video views or community growth.
  4. Feed winners into GMV Max. Make sure authorized posts for promoted products are available to the campaign so the system can test them.
  5. Drop what does not work. Winners get budget. Losers are retired quickly so they do not drag down results.
  6. Measure at the shop level. Track total GMV, contribution profit and lift over baseline, not just per-campaign ROAS.

What mistakes should you avoid?

  • Treating them as rivals. Choosing "one or the other" misses that Spark Ads content often powers GMV Max.
  • Trying to run manual Shop sales campaigns. At the time of writing, Shop-destination Sales campaigns must be GMV Max. Plan around that rather than fighting it.
  • Letting authorizations expire. Spark Ads only deliver while the creator's authorization is active. Track expiry dates for your best posts.
  • Comparing mismatched metrics. GMV Max includes organic and affiliate orders. Spark Ads metrics do not.
  • Starving GMV Max of creative. Automation cannot fix a thin video library. Raise content volume before raising budget.
  • Double counting success. If both tools push the same product to similar audiences, credit can blur. Separate objectives and look at total shop results.
  • Skipping the basics. Weak product pages and shop health issues hurt both tools, so fix them before adding ad spend. Our free GMV Max and affiliate audit reviews your campaigns, Spark Ads creative and creator program and flags what is holding results back.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the main difference between Spark Ads and GMV Max?

Spark Ads is an ad format that promotes real organic TikTok posts, from your account or an authorizing creator, with engagement credited to the original post. GMV Max is an automated campaign type for TikTok Shop that chooses creative, audiences and placements itself to maximize shop sales at your ROI target.

Can I still use Spark Ads to drive TikTok Shop sales?

At the time of writing, TikTok says GMV Max is the only supported campaign type for Sales campaigns with a TikTok Shop destination. Authorized creator and brand posts still matter, because GMV Max can pull in Spark Ads posts and authorized videos as creative, and Spark Ads remain available for other objectives.

Is GMV Max better than Spark Ads?

They do different jobs. GMV Max is built for scaling shop sales with automation, while Spark Ads give you manual control over targeting and objectives for things like launches, awareness and testing specific creator posts.

How do I get a Spark Ads code from a creator?

The creator opens the video in the TikTok app, taps the three dots, opens ad settings and generates an authorization code, choosing how long the authorization lasts. You then apply that code in TikTok Ads Manager to use the post.

Should a new TikTok Shop start with Spark Ads or GMV Max?

Most new shops should first build a library of creator content through seeding and affiliates. Once there is enough content and some sales history, GMV Max becomes the main sales engine, with Spark Ads used selectively for launches and creative testing.

Do Spark Ads and GMV Max compete for the same audience?

They can overlap, which is why it helps to give each a distinct job, objective and budget line. Keep Shop-destination sales in GMV Max and use Spark Ads for non-sales objectives so you are not double counting results.
